Nairobi Greenline First Anniversary - The Anoop Shah planting day (19th February 2011)
The first tree seedlin was planted on the Nairobi Greenline on 18th february 2010, during a colourful ceremony attended by many. This marked the beginning of a very ambitious project to plant 300,000 trees, to protect the Nairobi Park from the growing metropolis.
We have encountered a variety of challenges, but have pressed on in our plan. We thank all our sponsors and well-wishers for giving us the strength and support to march on.
In November of last year, our chairman, Anoop Shah, was shot and killed by armed robbers. We trully miss his energy and passion for the project.
It was against this that we chose a special planting ceremony in his honour, to celebrate our first anniversary. We mapped out a stretch not far from the Masai Corner, and planned to plant as many tree seedling as we could, in his honour. His family has donated over USD3000 towards trees on this stretch.
For our anniversary, we had corporated, members of the armed forces and students from universities and colleges attending. A total of 8,100 trees were planted. Well done to all who came!
To date, the Greenline has planted 60,000 tree seedlings, on a 12km stretch (50m wide). We have erected 8km of the electric fence.
We welcome our new chairman on board – Pradeep Paurana, who is also the chairman of the Athi River Mining Group. He brings on board his passion for the environment, his assute business character and drive to succeed. He is chairing a team of trustees of the Greenline, namely; Shilpa Haria, Betty Maina, Jan Vandenabeele, Andrew White, Sonal Sejpal and Julius Kipngetich.
